●Summery
This guided tour is to explore the old part of Tokyo by bike and boat, with a lunch of authentic Japanese food.
On this tour we are enthusiastic about exploring interesting places along the urban riverside by both bike and boat.
Although this is a full day tour we’ll proceed at a leisurely pace, stopping long and often enough to really take in the sights and tastes.
Actual cycle time over mostly flat, quiet streets is around 3 hours, making this easily doable by everyone with a medium level of fitness.
After a 15 minute ride from our base we’ll visit a Buddhist temple and Shinto shrine, known better to locals than tourists.
Then we’ll take our bikes aboard a modern river/harbour ferry at a pier near Asakusa. From the ferry you’ll experience Tokyo from a wonderfully unique perspective, which you might not have thought possible.
Following our 60 minute cruise, we’ll disembark and resume our bike tour through the calm old time streets of Tsukishima. This area is locally famous for its ‘Monja street’ home of Monjayaki: a savoury pancake with a variety of different fillings.
Next another half hour of easy pedaling, takes us to our specially chosen seafront lunch spot. This restaurant has a variety of different tuna bowls and is authentically Japanese.
After enjoying our lunch we’ll move on to what once was the center of seafood wholesale in Tokyo: Tsukiji Fish market.
Although the fish wholesale business was relocated to a new, location in 2018, this area is still as active as ever and popular to visit with loads of streetfood vendors to sample as you stroll along.
Next, we’ll cycle along the riverside to the Fukagawa area. Fukagawa has two religious places; Fukagawa-fudo temple and Tomioka-hachimangu shrine: both which were founded in the Edo era, and are popular with locals and tourists alike. There are also opportunities to try street foods here!
Finally we board the ferry again and head off back to our home base.
This tour is all about experiencing the waterways and local cycling paths of east Tokyo with our bilingual guide which you might otherwise be unable to do.
